Introduction
If you’ve been sitting on the fence about getting an AI certification, Microsoft just gave you a very good reason to get off it.
On 25 February 2026, Microsoft officially dropped 10 new AI credentials in one go 4 full certifications and 6 Applied Skills all immediately open for registration. No waitlist, no steep prerequisites for entry-level tracks, and most assessments are completable in under an hour.
For Australians working in IT, business, or tech leadership, the timing couldn’t be more important. The Australian job market has shifted dramatically, and right now, AI literacy is the single most in-demand skill that employers are looking for. This isn’t hype it’s backed by data straight from LinkedIn’s Jobs on the Rise 2026 report and Microsoft’s own Work Trends Index.
So, let’s cut through the noise. Here’s exactly what Microsoft launched, what’s being retired, and most importantly which certification you should go after first depending on where you’re at in your career.
Why Is This Such a Big Deal for Australians?
Australia is in the middle of a genuine AI skills crunch. Microsoft’s Work Trends Index found that three quarters of Australian business leaders say they wouldn’t hire someone without AI skills well above the global average of 66%. Meanwhile, the Tech Council of Australia predicts Australia will have around 200,000 AI-related jobs by 2030.
The problem? There aren’t enough certified professionals to fill those roles.
Microsoft has publicly committed to training one million Australians and New Zealanders with AI skills, and this new certification drop is a massive part of that effort. Universities like Western Sydney University are already fully funding Microsoft AI bootcamps for students the window to get ahead of the crowd is right now, before the market floods with certified candidates.
LinkedIn’s 2026 Jobs on the Rise report tells the full story: AI Engineer came in as the number one fastest-growing role in Australia over the past three years, and Director of Artificial Intelligence ranked number four. These aren’t niche or fringe roles anymore they’re mainstream career paths that companies across every sector are actively hiring for.

What's Coming in the Next Few Months
February’s launch is just chapter one. Microsoft has already confirmed a second wave of certifications entering beta from March through July 2026, covering the more technical and specialised end of the spectrum.
AI-901 — Azure AI Fundamentals
(replaces AI-900) Beta: April 2026 | Live: June 2026 the successor to AI-900, rebuilt from the ground up around modern AI applications and agentic systems using Microsoft Azure AI Foundry. No technical background needed to get started.
AI-103 — Azure AI App and Agent Developer Associate

SC-500 — Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate
Beta: May 2026 | Live: July 2026 Expands the traditional cloud security engineering role to cover protecting AI models and AI-powered systems. Given Australia’s cyber security talent shortage and ASIC’s enforcement focus, this will be one of the most in-demand credentials of the year.

What's Being Retired — And What to Do About It
As Microsoft adds new credentials, it’s also cleaning house on older ones. Here’s what you need to know.
- AI-900 (Azure AI Fundamentals) is being retired and replaced by AI-901. If you’re mid-study for AI-900, you have a clear path forward: pivot to AI-901, which has training available from March 2026 and goes live in June.
- AI-102 (Azure AI Engineer Associate) is being retired and replaced by AI-103. The new version is built specifically for the agentic AI era if you’re currently studying AI-102, now is the time to review your study plan.
- MS-900 (Microsoft 365 Fundamentals) retired on 31 March 2026.
- Other certs on the retirement list this year include AZ-204 (Azure Developer Associate), AZ-500 (Azure Security Technologies), and several Dynamics 365 Fundamentals credentials.
If you’ve already passed a retiring certification, don’t stress. Your credential stays valid on your Microsoft transcript until it naturally expires. Retirement simply means you can no longer sit or retake that specific exam after the retirement date.
Which Certification Should Australians Go for First?
This is the big question, and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on your current role, your technical background, and where you want your career to go. Here’s our straightforward breakdown by profile:
- If you’re an IT admin or Microsoft 365 manager → Start with AB-900 This is a fast win if you’re already managing a Microsoft 365 environment. It validates your ability to configure, secure, and support Microsoft Copilot deployments and it’s in enormous demand right now as Australian businesses roll out Copilot at scale. You can study and sit this exam almost immediately.
- If you’re a business professional with no coding background → Start with AB-730 No coding, no Azure setup, no technical prerequisites. The AI Business Professional cert proves you can use generative AI and Copilot to genuinely improve business workflows and outcomes. This is the right starting point for professionals in finance, operations, HR, marketing, legal, and project management who want to future-proof their role.
- If you’re a manager, team lead, or senior executive → Start with AB-731 The AI Transformation Leader certification is designed for people driving AI adoption across their teams or organisations. If you’re a department head, senior manager, or C-suite leader, this credential demonstrates you can champion AI responsibly and strategically. It’s increasingly appearing as a preferred qualification on senior leadership job ads in Australia.
- If you’re a developer or software engineer → Start with AI-103 (from June 2026) This replaces AI-102 and is purpose-built for the current era of agentic AI. It covers Microsoft Azure AI Foundry, multi-step reasoning, and production-ready agent development. If you’re currently studying for AI-102, consider pivoting to AI-103 study materials now and sitting the exam as soon as it goes live in June.
- If you’re a complete beginner → Start with AI-901 (from June 2026) The successor to AI-900, rebuilt around modern AI applications and agentic systems. No technical background required. A great foundation that opens the door to every other certification on this list. Training materials are available from March 2026.
- If you work in cybersecurity → Watch for SC-500 (July 2026) This brand-new certification expands the cloud security engineering role to include protecting AI models and AI-powered systems. Given Australia’s cybersecurity talent shortage and the increasing regulatory pressure from ASIC, this is shaping up to be one of the most valuable credentials on the market in the second half of 2026.
A Free Way to Get Started Right Now
Not ready to commit to a full exam yet? Start with the Applied Skills and start for free.
Microsoft’s Applied Skills assessments are available through Microsoft Learn at no cost. The three best entry points for Australians right now are:
- Streamline business workflows with AI chat — for all professionals using Microsoft 365
- Generate reports with AI research agents — for anyone in a reporting or analytical role
- Create agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio — for developers and technically minded users
Each takes around 45 minutes to complete, adds a verifiable credential to your Microsoft profile, and gives you a real taste of the material before you invest in a full certification exam.
The Bottom Line
Microsoft dropping 10 credentials at once isn’t routine it’s a clear signal that the AI skills era is here right now, not in some distant future. For Australians, the timing aligns perfectly with a job market where AI literacy has shifted from a nice-to-have to a genuine hiring filter.
The good news is there’s now a credentialled pathway for every type of professional from the IT admin deploying Copilot for a 500-person company in Brisbane, to the C-suite executive leading AI transformation for a Sydney bank, to the developer building agentic applications in Melbourne.
The best time to start is right now, before the rest of the market catches up.
